Family rides take a winter break |
No ride on Tuesday, October 6 or Tuesday, November 3.
Our monthly first-Tuesday family rides are taking a winter break. With evenings getting dark so early, an after-work ride no longer works well for families.
We're working on something earlier on the weekends that will work better for the darker months. Details to come in a future newsletter.

Concord Thursday Night Rides |
Thursdays at 6 PM from Pleasant Hill BART.
Want to keep riding in the meantime? The Concord Thursday Night Ride is a longer ride with a larger bunch of people around Concord.

Bike Kitchen: fix your own bike in Concord |
Sundays Oct 18, Nov 1, Nov 15, Dec 6 and Dec 20, 11 AM to 2:45 PM, at 2730 Salvio Street, Concord (behind the Olympic High School parking lot).
Need a tune-up? Bike Concord's Bike Kitchen is a do-it-yourself repair shop where volunteer mechanics help you fix your own bike, with the parts you need on hand. It also has used bikes at budget-friendly prices.
A basic maintenance class runs from 11 AM to noon. Donations are suggested, and no reasonable donation is refused.

Show up at City Hall this Tuesday |
Tuesday, October 6, 6 PM, in the Council Chamber at City Hall.
The City of Walnut Creek is proclaiming October Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month at the start of Tuesday's City Council meeting. Leora Tanjuatco will accept the proclamation on behalf of Walk Bike Walnut Creek and speak for a few minutes about our group and why pedestrian safety matters.
Please come and show your support. A full room tells the Council that people in Walnut Creek care about safe streets for walking and biking. The proclamation is at the very beginning of the meeting, so come on time.

Bakery morning at Gus's, Saturday Oct 17 |
Saturday, October 17, 9 AM to 1 PM, on First Avenue right by the Canal Trail.
Gus opens his driveway bakery on First Avenue, right on the Contra Costa Canal Trail, every third Saturday. Expect croissants, sticky buns, scones (including gluten-free) and more, plus coffee, tea and fresh-squeezed orange juice, with cafe tables to sit and enjoy them.
From most of central Walnut Creek you can get there almost entirely on paved trail, about two flat miles from Civic Park. That makes it an easy ride with kids, with a real treat at the end. Drop by any time during the morning.
|
Iron Horse Trail closures |
Downtown: closed October 5 to October 12. Treat Boulevard bridge: closed October 5 to December 31.
The Iron Horse Trail is closed downtown, from Mt. Diablo Boulevard to Civic Park, from Monday, October 5 through Monday, October 12, while PG&E does vegetation management and wildlife enhancement work.
The trail's pedestrian bridge over Treat Boulevard is closed from Monday, October 5 through Thursday, December 31 for Contra Costa County work. Follow the posted detour signs, and check the Park District's page for the map.

Meet Walnut Creek's new councilmembers, Thursday Oct 15 |
Thursday, October 15, 5:30 to 8 PM, at a neighbor's home in Walnut Creek.
Come meet Cherise Khaund and Brendan Moran, who are running for Walnut Creek City Council on November 3, in a casual setting. Bring your questions about walking, biking and traffic safety.
There's dinner and activities for the kids, and you can come and go any time during the evening. The address goes to people who RSVP.

Walnut Creek 2050: have your say by October 25 |
The online questionnaire is open until October 25.
Walnut Creek is rewriting its General Plan, the long-term plan that shapes our streets, bike lanes, housing and parks through 2050. The city held its first community workshop on September 24 and now wants to hear from everyone else.
Take a few minutes to fill in the questionnaire and ask for safe walking and biking routes. Name the specific places that worry you: the intersection you won't let your kid cross alone, the street with no sidewalk, the trail that dead-ends into traffic.

Trunk or Treat, Friday Oct 23 |
Friday, October 23, 3 to 6 PM, at Civic Park.
Walnut Creek Arts + Rec's Trunk or Treat returns to Civic Park with a trick-or-treat lane of booths full of activities, games and candy. The first hour, 3 to 4 PM, is a Low-Sensory Hour with no music or jump-scares, allergy-friendly treats and quiet zones. From 4 to 6 PM there's music, activities, giveaways and a scavenger hunt with prizes.
Civic Park sits right on the Iron Horse Trail, so it's an easy one to bike to with the kids. Bring your buckets or bags for goodies.
